Consulting

I do a small amount of consulting. It's 30 days, asynchronous, and $4,500.

For Series A SaaS founders who are still doing sales and customer success themselves, or who need a crash course in change management.

Message Me on LinkedIn

What It Is

You tell me what you want help with. I'd rather solve an actual problem you have than convince you that you have one and some pre-built engagement plan I offer is going to save you.

Think of it as a temporary fractional, before you've built yourself a team. You can ask me questions, consult with me, request my feedback or edits on things, whatever that is for you. Change communication and SaaS rollouts are my specialty. Founders aren't always looking for customer help, though. Sometimes it's people help. Someone to tell you what they think is actually going on, when you'd normally have no one to ask. If you're doing your demos alone and wish you had a second opinion, I'll give you one.

I won't write your comms for you. I'll give you feedback and make recommendations. Much like using AI, you need to use your own judgment in the end.

You never share customer data or disclose the companies you work with.

You also get a license to use The DANCE System™ with your customers in your rollouts.

Engagements are $4,500 for 30 days unless both of us want to renew.

I no longer practice law, and I will not provide legal advice. Nothing I do or say is intended as legal or financial advice. Don't rely on it as either.

How It Works

  1. Message me on LinkedIn and tell me what's going on. A few lines is enough.

  2. Within two business days you get a reply: whether it's something I can help with, how I'd start, and how to proceed, with an invoice link that's good for three days.

  3. If you want to go ahead, you pay and send me the things I asked for, within seven calendar days. The 30 days start the day those are in, not the day you pay.

  4. Everything is asynchronous. You send the situation or your draft, I send back what I think is actually going on and what I'd change, and you write what goes out. I reply within one business day, always outside of business hours (to maintain boundaries with my day job). No calls.

What You Send

Anything where a person outside or inside your company has to be told something, brought along, or answered, and you're not sure what to say. I'll accept whatever you want to send me: docs, audio notes, Notion files, videos, jumbled scans of napkins with writing on them, whatever. Some examples, by where they come up.

Customers, After They've Signed

  • A customer signed and their team hasn't started. Send what's happened so far and what you've sent them. I'll tell you where it stalled inside their organization and what to send next, to whom.
  • The person who bought it has gone quiet. That's the most common one.
  • Users say it's too different from what they had, and my champion says they'll come around. They won't, on their own. I'll tell you what the champion needs to hear from you, and what she needs to say to her team.
  • A customer's IT or finance person is blocking the rollout. Send the thread, redacted. I'll tell you what they're protecting and how to get past it without going around them.
  • A customer wants a "rollout plan" from us and we don't have one. I'll tell you what belongs on the one page and what doesn't. You write it, and you'll have the shape for the next one.
  • Renewal is coming and their executive wants a "business case." I'll tell you what that document actually is for them and what has to be in it.
  • A customer is angry. Send what they wrote. I'll tell you what they actually want and what your reply has to do.
  • A customer wants to expand to another team and I don't know how to run that. Same rollout, second time. I'll tell you the sequence.
  • I want to ask a customer for a testimonial, a case study, or a reference call. Timing, and what the ask has to say. You write it.
  • My onboarding emails, kickoff agenda, or "what to expect" page. Send what you have and I'll tell you what to change. If you have nothing yet, I'll tell you what each one needs to do, and you write it.

Selling

  • Watch a demo I gave. Record it the way you'd give it, no prospect on the call, and send it with a few lines about who it's for. You'll get notes back with what the buyer heard and what to change.
  • A prospect went quiet after the demo. Send the thread. I'll tell you what probably happened on their side and what to write.
  • A prospect wants a proposal, a pilot, or to "socialize it internally." I'll tell you what each of those actually means and how to answer it.
  • Help me figure out who else at the customer needs to be involved before I sign them. That's the question that decides whether the account stalls later.
  • Tell me what's wrong with my deck or my sales page. Send it. I'm not a graphic designer, so I won't make it pretty, but I'll tear down why it currently doesn't work.

Product Changes

  • We're raising prices. Who hears it, in what order, and what each message has to say.
  • We're retiring a feature or a plan.
  • We're migrating everyone to a new version.
  • We had an outage and I need to write to customers. What the message has to do, and the sequence. Not the incident report.
  • A customer keeps asking for a feature we're not building. How to say no without losing them.

Your Team

  • My first hire pushed back on me in front of a customer. Send what happened. I'll tell you if you're overreacting and what to say either way.
  • My co-founder keeps reopening decisions we've made.
  • I have to let someone go and I don't know how to say it. How to say it, yes. What you owe them legally, no. I don't give legal advice. Get that answered by a lawyer first.
  • I'm about to hire my first customer success person and I need to describe the job. I'll tell you what the job actually is at your company. You write the page.
  • I need to tell my team about a change in how we work, and I know it'll land badly. That's the original use of the system.
  • A contractor or partner went quiet on me.

Investors and the Board

  • An investor's reply got short. Send both messages, redacted.
  • I have to write an investor update and something went badly.
  • I need to ask an investor for something: an intro, more time, a hard conversation. What the ask has to say, and what they're likely to say back.

Things You Wrote and Haven't Sent

  • I wrote something angry at midnight. Send it before you send it.
  • I've rewritten this email four times. Send all four. The first one is usually the right one, minus a sentence.

What Doesn't Fit

Writing your messages for you. Legal or financial advice of any kind. Contracts, employment law, and anything a lawyer or HR should answer. Building or changing the product. Your sales pipeline and pricing strategy. Writing your marketing copy, or making your deck or website pretty. Fundraising strategy. Anything that needs a same-day answer. Anyone who wants me on a call.

The DANCE License

The DANCE System is the change communication system I built. On its own it's $197 on Gumroad; here it comes with the 30 days.

The right to use it with your own customers in your own rollouts. You get the files on day one, and you don't need to know it before we start.

You can't teach it, certify anyone in it, resell it, or hand it to another company.

Who You're Dealing With

Whitney Stout, JD

Creator of The DANCE System

My expertise is people. That's why I can advise on rollouts. I've been on the implementation side of software from both directions, as the customer and inside the tech company. I started my career as an attorney, and since then I've worked in non-profits and in large decentralized organizations. Today I'm a strategic operations director at a public university.

If you'd like to know who you're dealing with before you write, the TEDx talk is the quickest way to find out, the tools on Gumroad will show you how I work, and LinkedIn has the rest.

FAQ

Starting

What happens after I message you?

Within two business days you get a reply: whether it's something I can help with, how I'd start, and how to proceed. If you want to go ahead, you pay, send me the things I asked for, and we start.

How do I pay?

Up front. My reply comes with an invoice link. Decide within three days of getting it; after that I can't promise I'll still take it on. No payment plans.

Is there a contract?

Yes, a short one: what's included, what isn't, the start window, response times, confidentiality, the license, and how either of us ends it.

What do you need from me to start?

Whatever helps me understand the situation. For example:

  • A short recording of your product, ten minutes or so
  • What a customer's team does differently because of it
  • Who on their side is usually involved, by role
  • What's on your calendar for the next 30 days
  • A few emails that sound like you, so I know how you write
  • The thing you're stuck on right now, in whatever shape it's in

I'll tell you what I want in the reply.

When do the 30 days start?

The day the things I asked for are in, not the day you pay.

What if I pay and then don't send anything?

You have to send me the things I asked for within seven calendar days of paying. If you don't, I cancel and refund three quarters of the fee. I keep a quarter, since it impacts how I chose to reserve my time.

Timing

How fast do you answer?

Within one business day, and never during business hours. I check in once a day, outside my day job, and reply in a batch, so if you send something at 9 a.m. and something at 4 p.m., they come back together.

When do you work on this?

Outside business hours, always, and business hours means Eastern time. I never reply, engage, or review during business hours. I keep an extremely strict boundary between my day job, time with my family, and this.

What counts as a business day?

Monday through Friday, Eastern time, not holidays. The day counts toward the one-day promise; the reply itself lands outside business hours.

What if I send you five things on a Monday?

If you send more than I can process within one business day, I will balance output with quality and get to what I can. If one of them matters more, say which and it goes first.

What if something's big?

If it needs more than a reply, I'll tell you before I start and we'll decide whether it fits in the month or is its own thing.

Do we ever talk?

No. If something isn't landing in writing after a few rounds, I'll record a short video walking you through it.

Sending Things

Where does it all happen?

We'll settle that between us at the start: how we communicate, and how documents, links, and files pass back and forth. If you don't have a preference, I'll set you up in a client portal.

What format does it need to be in?

None. Docs, audio notes, Notion files, videos, jumbled scans of napkins with writing on them, whatever you've got.

Is there a limit on what I can send?

No. Things get answered in the order they arrive.

Will you write it for me?

No. I'll tell you what it needs to do, what's wrong with your draft, and what I'd change. You write it, and you decide what goes out.

Who owns what comes out of this?

Your writing is yours, and so are my notes on it. The system stays mine.

The 30 Days

What if I don't use all 30 days?

That's fine. The fee buys the 30 days whether you send one thing or forty.

Can I pause?

No. Thirty consecutive days.

Can I come back?

Only if both of us want to. Another 30 days, same terms. Nothing renews by itself.

Boundaries

What about my customer data?

Do not send it. Describe people by role and companies by type. If something arrives with names in it, I'll send it back unread and ask for the redacted version.

Will you sign an NDA?

Yes, with you. Not with one of your customers or any other third party, because I don't want to know your customer data. The agreement between us has a confidentiality clause covering your material either way.

Is any of this legal advice?

No. I no longer practice law, and I will not provide legal advice. Nothing I do or say is intended as legal or financial advice, and you shouldn't rely on it as either. If a question turns into one for a lawyer, I'll say so and stop there.

Sooo... AI?

I use AI to generate blank worksheets and templates, and to generate assets from my own IP. I do not enter client information into any LLM, nor do I use AI to draft my assessments or replies. So if I'm a bit loose with my grammatical precision, breathe through it.
